03/17/09 Hoo and Tuna Slam

May 20th, 2009

We waited an awful long time for the weather to finally get right enough to allow us to get out and get some offshore action in.  We started the morning off trolling with no bites for almost three hours.  Everyone, including me, was just starting to feel a little bit antsy when all at once we had four fish on.  The first hoo was boated pretty quickly as he was on a Shimano Tiagra 50W, but the other three, hooked on the somewhat lighter Shimano TLD 25’s (also with 50# line), gave some of the anglers a little more trouble.  In any case, in a mere matter of minutes we had gone from skunk to slam as we boated four nice wahoo.  We trolled the area for a good while longer before trolling a bit offshore to find something else to try and get into.  As we moved offshore of the spot we were lucky to encounter a school of blackfin tuna.  A sign of things to come we immediately caught a nice blackfin on the shotgun rod.  After that, it was definitely on as we got tuna bite after tuna bite until the anglers called uncle and the box was pretty much full.  A few more hours of trolling around and sipping beers and it was time to head home with a full fish box.  Great day and good work to everyone involved. Stay tuned for posts after this weekend as (knock knock) the weather is looking promising.  PY
